Following the start of vaccinations at the Basel-Stadt cantonal vaccination centre last Monday, the first residents in a Basel-Stadt nursing home were vaccinated today, Wednesday afternoon, 30 December 2020. 76 residents of the Wendelin nursing home in Riehen received their vaccination this afternoon.

Nursing home residents are particularly at-risk individuals and vaccinating them should be prioritized along with other elderly people and those with pre-existing conditions. That is why the Department of Health wants to start vaccinations in nursing homes as quickly as possible.

Mobile vaccination teams are used in nursing homes to vaccinate as many residents as possible on site. To make this possible, preparatory work had to be completed in the homes. This means that all residents have to be informed about the vaccination and consent documents carefully obtained in advance. This might necessitate discussions with family doctors, relatives or legal advisers. Because this process is highly sensitive given the special situation in the homes, it requires a little more time than was needed to launch the booking platform for the vaccination centre.

Following a meeting with the Commission of Experts on Long-Term Care and a delegation from nursing homes shortly before Christmas, the Department of Health sent the nursing homes the necessary information and documents and informed them that they can get in touch as soon as they have the consent forms ready in their institution. There must be a signed consent form with medical questionnaire from every resident who wishes to receive the vaccination or from their legal representative (legal adviser, relative).

Vaccinations have now been delivered in the first nursing home: This afternoon, the mobile vaccination team was able to vaccinate 76 residents and day-care centre attendees of the Wendelin nursing home in Riehen, in the presence of Head of the Department of Health Lukas Engelberger and Cantonal Pharmacist Esther Ammann. The first person to be vaccinated in a Basel-Stadt nursing home is 76-year-old Hans-Rudolf Kehrli.

More vaccination programmes in nursing homes will follow from next week.
