Daycare facilities and elementary schools to open on 11 May – no leaving examinations in Basel-Stadt
Department of Education
Yesterday afternoon, the Federal Council passed safety policies according to which daycare facilities, as well as nurseries, primary and secondary schools can start operating again. Furthermore, the Federal Council has also finally come to a decision about leaving examinations. The consequences of the relaxation of the pandemic measures will be as follows in the Canton of Basel-Stadt:
Reopening of schools (compulsory schools)
Classes for nursery, primary school and secondary school pupils will begin again on 11 May 2020 at the normal lesson times and following the normal timetable. Daycare facilities are also reopening. According to guidelines from the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), distancing between teachers and staff and pupils must be maintained wherever possible. Distancing between the pupils themselves is not necessary. Hygiene rules must continue to be strictly adhered to in schools (#SeifenBoss). Schools will not put on parents’ evenings, information events and voluntary offers. Ill pupils and teachers who have the standard symptoms still need to stay at home.
Leaving examinations (post-compulsory schools)
After weeks of waiting, pupils in the Canton of Basel-Stadt finally have certainty: There will be no leaving examinations, either written or oral, at grammar schools, the Specialised Matura School and for the vocational baccalaureate. Only grades for practical experience will count. The Department of Education of the Canton of Basel-Stadt welcomes this decision, which takes into consideration the exceptional situation in recent weeks. Distance learning in the final years will continue until grades have been determined. Pupils who would currently not pass on the basis of their grades for practical experience will have the opportunity to sit an examination. School management will provide information about this in the coming days.
Daycare centres and playgroups
Daycare centres will also open on 11 May 2020, taking into consideration the safety policy that has been devised. Hygiene measures include regular handwashing and adherence to distancing regulations between children and adults. Parents can take their children to daycare facilities at the normal and arranged times, but now they must hand over their children in the reception area and may no longer enter the daycare facility. Group sizes in daycare facilities will continue to be limited. Parents who wish to continue to look after their children at home or who are in an at-risk group must not send their children to the daycare facility. Parental contributions are temporarily not being collected. The canton will cover this loss and pay it directly to the daycare facilities. New admissions are only possible if the parents’ presence in the daycare facility is not required for settling in. Playgroups with compulsory German-language support will also open again on 11 May 2020.
The Department of Education of the Canton of Basel-Stadt would like to thank all of the teachers and staff, as well as the staff in the daycare facilities, for their impressive dedication and the parents for their understanding, during this exceptional time.
