Coronavirus: Tuesday bulletin on the case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Tuesday, 22 December 2020, 11.30, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 7476 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 759 active cases in isolation and 775 people in quarantine. The 7-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 321 (CH: 260), the 14-day notification rate is 665 (CH: 613).

There have been 297 new infections (referred to as “active cases”) since last Friday: 94 on Saturday, 80 on Sunday, 44 on Monday and 79 today, Tuesday.

Of the 759 active cases, 103 residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. In addition, 50 people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 153 people in hospital, 18 require intensive care.

The total of 7476 infections in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 6587 recoveries, 130 deaths and 759 active cases. Seven women and men aged between 72 and 92 have died as a result of Covid-19 since the last bulletin of last Friday. Six people died in hospital and one in a nursing home.

Information about sources of infection

The current sources of infection are diverse, as follows: 2626 new infections were recorded in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 24 November 2020 until 21 December 2020). 49 percent (or 1284 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (38 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (7 per cent), at work (19 per cent) or in a nursing home (12 per cent). Ten percent said that they had several possible sources of infection. 99 residents from nine different nursing homes have currently tested positive.
