The Cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and Jura take in patients from Alsace seriously ill with Covid-19
Joint press release from the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and Jura
Department of Health
The three cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and Jura are taking over the care of two patients from Alsace who are seriously ill with Coronavirus Covid-19 as a humanitarian and neighbourly gesture and form of emergency aid. The preparations for relocating the patients are underway.
The department of Haut-Rhin sent an urgent request for help to the three cantons on Friday afternoon, after the capacity in its hospitals had been overstretched, especially for patients in the neighbouring country suffering from respiratory problems. Alsace sent the same call for help to the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
Currently, the three cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft and Jura in the north west of Switzerland still have sufficient capacity to provide intensive care to patients with respiratory problems. This will be further expanded over the coming weeks to handle the expected rise in need for the residents of the three cantons.
After consulting with the federal authorities, the three cantonal governments agreed that two patients can be transferred from Alsace to the University Hospital of Basel, the Cantonal Hospital Baselland and the Hôpital du Jura, in Delémont. The preparations for relocating the patients are underway.
The large number of people always commuting from Alsace and Baden reflects the cross-border culture of our region. Both regions enjoy good relations in terms their residents, economy and administration. The short-term admission of patients from Alsace is a true act of humanity, the extension of a helping hand with emergency aid and proof of the this trinational region’s determination to face the corona crisis with a united front that transcends their borders.
