Restrictions on restaurants and cafés in Steinenvorstadt
The Government passed a three-stage plan for restaurants and cafés in Steinenvorstadt today, in order to prevent crowds of people as seen last Saturday. Firstly, the recently granted extension of boulevard areas in Steinenvorstadt is being withdrawn with immediate effect. Guests and operators of the establishments are being asked to adhere to distancing and hygiene regulations. A new source of coronavirus infection would mean an economic and health-related relapse.
The Government has decided to withdraw the extension of boulevard areas in Steinenvorstadt as an emergency measure. The Government granted restaurateurs this extension to help them cope with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. After numerous people in Steinenvorstadt disregarded the unchanged distancing regulations last Saturday, 16 May 2020, the prerequisites for the extension of outdoor seating no longer exist. For these businesses, the boulevard areas are subject to ordinary approvals again with immediate effect.
The Basel-Stadt Cantonal Police will increase their presence in the area and check whether guests are adhere to distancing regulations in future. They will issue warnings and fines where necessary.
If taking back the boulevard areas in Steinenvorstadt turns out to have too little effect, the next step will be to limit opening hours until 22.00. If this is also ineffective, the Government plans to close all of the boulevard areas in Steinenvorstadt, at least where this is necessary.
The three-stage plan passed today will also be applied in other parts of the city if necessary. People in the canton are still becoming infected with the coronavirus. These people can pass on the virus, even if they do not have any symptoms. It is therefore important that everybody continues to adhere to distancing and hygiene regulations. A new source of coronavirus infection would mean an economic and health-related relapse.
