Coronavirus: Friday bulletin on case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Friday, 18. December 2020, 09:30, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 7179 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 916 active cases in isolation and 927 people in quarantine. The 7-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 329 (CH: 274), the 14-day notification rate is 693 (CH: 618).
There have been 3047 new infections (referred to as “active cases”) since last Tuesday: 98 on Wednesday, 119 on Thursday and 87 today, Friday.
Of the 916 active cases, 98 residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. The number of Basel-Stadt residents in hospital has increased slightly from 93 to 98 since last Tuesday. In addition, 49 people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 147 people in hospital, 15 require intensive care.
The total of 7179 infections in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 6140 recoveries, 123 deaths and 916 active cases. Eleven women and men aged between 72 and 94 have died as a result of Covid-19 since the last bulletin of last Tuesday. Four people died in hospital, seven in a nursing home.
Diverse sources of infection
The current sources of infection continue to be diverse, as follows: 2642 new infections were recorded in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 20 November 2020 until 17 December 2020). 48 percent (or 1278 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (38 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (8 per cent), at work (19 per cent) or in a nursing home (10 per cent).
"Visiting service" by telefone over the festive season
Alone instead of among the family: Some people are concerned because of the upcoming festive season in view of the pandemic. This is especially true for all of those who are in isolation or quarantine due to corona. For them, the Swiss Red Cross SRC Basel has set up a "visiting service" by telefone, which will be available from tomorrow, Saturday, 19 December 2020. With this offer of help, Red Cross-volunteers call upon request lonely people in Basel-Stadt for a in-depth conversation. These are not expert conversations with trained professionals, but a low-threshold service to provide opportunities for a conversation from person to person. The Department of Health is providing financial support for the project, which will run until the end of January 2021. Interested persons call 077 441 99 38 for their appointment request via text message or spoken message (combox). They will receive a prompt confirmation of their request and within 24 hours the "visit" by telefone will take place.
