Coronavirus daily bulletin: 182 confirmed cases in the Canton of Basel-Stadt, a meeting is convened with all hospitals

As of Wednesday the 18th of March 2020, the Department of Health Canton Basel-Stadt has reported a total of 182 positive cases among the residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt. On Tuesday evening, a meeting convened by the Head of the Department of Health, Lukas Engelberger, was attended by the canton’s public and private hospitals and upon its conclusion, all parties agreed to work closely together.

The number of positive cases among the residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt reached 182 as of 10 a.m. on Wednesday the 18th of March 2020. That is 17 more than the day before. Around 40 of the cases are currently hospitalised as they has been infected with Covid-19 (coronavirus), 36 have recovered. The Canton of Basel-Stadt has recorded a further four deaths.

In addition to testing the residents of the canton, medical staff in the Canton of Basel-Stadt have also tested suspected cases from other cantons in Switzerland and neighbouring countries. So far, tests of 346 people have been confirmed as positive (this figure includes the 182 cases in Basel).

As of today, Wednesday the 18th of March 2020, two army ambulances and their respective personnel will be assisting the Basel-Stadt emergency services in the canton. They will relieve the burden on the health system in the transportation of patients.

Constructive meeting with hospital representatives

On Tuesday evening, 17 March 2020, Lukas Engelberger (Head of the Department of Health), Thomas Steffen (Cantonal Physician) and Peter Indra (Head of Healthcare) met with top representatives of public and private hospitals. The meeting proved to be very constructive. All the parties reaffirmed their willingness to deal with the corona crisis and agreed to cooperate closely as they tackle the situation together in a unified approach. They are now drawing up a detailed policy on exactly how the appropriate care is to be provided and how all patients and resources are to be managed. All of the parties involved are contributing to this policy.

In response to a request made by the two cantonal health department heads, a meeting will be held tomorrow, Thursday the 19th of March bringing together representatives of hospitals, nursing homes, medical companies, Spitex and the nursing associations from both cantons. The health authorities and service providers of the Basel region are determined to tackle the Corona crisis together.
