Coronavirus: Friday bulletin on case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Friday, 11 December 2020, 10.30, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 6508 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 939 active cases in isolation and 811 people in quarantine. The 14-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 668, with that of Switzerland at 567.
There have been 350 new infections (referred to as “active cases”) since Tuesday: 118 on Wednesday, 105 on Thursday and 127 today, Friday.
Of the 939 active cases, 97 residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. The number of Basel-Stadt residents in hospital has fallen slightly since Tuesday from 106 to 97. In addition, 42 people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 139 people in hospital, 17 require intensive care.
The total of 6508 infections in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 5478 recoveries, 101 deaths and 939 active cases. Seven women and men aged between 74 and 100 have died as a result of Covid-19 since the last bulletin on Tuesday. All seven died in a nursing home.
Diverse sources of infection
The current sources of infection continue to be diverse, as follows: 2779 new infections were recorded in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 13 November 2020 until 10 December 2020). 44 percent (or 1228 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (40 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (11 per cent), at work (19 per cent) or in a nursing home (11 per cent).
