The Europa League Round of 16 between FC Basel 1893 and Eintracht Frankfurt, due to be played on 19 March 2020 in St. Jakob-Park, Basel, cannot take place. Following consultation with the cantonal crisis team [Kantonaler Krisenstab], the Basel-Stadt Cantonal Police decided not to approve this football match. This decision was taken in view of the protection of the health of the population and in light of official steps to slow the spread of the coronavirus, and in consideration of the work load on the medical services in Basel.
Experience has shown that even for games played “behind closed doors”, several hundred fans of the away team would travel to Basel and gather outside the stadium during the game. This case would not meet the threshold for the Federal Council ban on gatherings of more than one thousand people, but it is not justifiable from a preventive point of view. Furthermore, the medical services in Basel are currently working at the limits of their capacity and could not guarantee the necessary resources for such a large-scale operation.
