The Department of Health and the Department of Education of the Canton of Basel-Stadt released a statement today regarding the opening of schools on the 9th of March 2020. This is to go ahead as usual, even in the towns of Riehen and Bettingen. Only the pupils, teachers and staff who have recently visited areas of risk must not go to school. They must stay at home for 14 days.

The authorities have analysed the situation in great detail over the past few days and noted where the virus is spreading. Based on their findings, they have concluded that it is safe for schools to open again this coming Monday, 9th of March 2020. All legal guardians and pupils will be informed of this decision by letter and via the Internet, media, press and widely used social media channels.

Any children, youngsters, teachers or members of staff returning from an area at risk, after having stayed there for at least one night, must stay at home for 14 days and if they fall ill, they must call their GP.

All of the public events to be held at schools (e.g. concerts, student performances, etc.) have been cancelled or postponed for at least four weeks. This also applies to school trips to high-risk areas. All of the other school outings, stays and ski trips will go ahead as planned. Also excluded from this measure are parents’ evenings and other informative events.

A campaign specifically designed to help raise awareness among schoolchildren regarding the correct hygiene procedures, stresses the importance of:

  • Washing hands regularly
  • Using soap - there is no need for disinfectants

The general rules of hygiene from the Federal Office of Public Health must also be observed:

  • Cough or sneeze into your sleeve or a paper tissue (throw the tissue away immediately after use)
  • Refrain from shaking hands
  • Children, teachers and members of staff who have a fever or cough must stay at home

These measures must be observed until it has been announced that the threat of infection is over and/or for the next four weeks. These rules also apply to nurseries, playgroups and all facilities providing day care or working with children.

Answers to parents’ questions regarding school times and policies will be posted on the following page from 2pm today
