Almost a normal Monday morning
Department of Justice and Security
Officers from Basel-Stadt Cantonal Police spoke to dozens of people in the city centre on Monday morning and asked for their understanding that the Fasnacht Carnival cannot go ahead. The occasional Schyssdräggziigli [carnival followers] were out and about.
Despite their sadness and disappointment about the cancellation of the Fasnacht Carnival, the vast majority of Basel residents present were sympathetic to the orders of the Basel-Stadt Cantonal Police. In an extraordinary meeting held on Friday, the Executive Council took the decision to prohibit events organised for the Fasnacht Carnival 2020. The decision was made in light of the ordinance issued by the Federal Council on measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
The Basel-Stadt Cantonal Police did not issue any fines to the Schyssdräggziigli and people assembled in the city centre. Instead they handed them information flyers. One restaurant did not adhere to the opening hours in accordance with the regulations. The Cantonal Police will report the case to the Bau- und Gastgewerbeinspektorat [building and catering inspectorate].
