Coronavirus: Friday bulletin on case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Friday, 26 March 2021, 11.10, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 10,467 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 281 active cases in isolation and 837 people in quarantine. The 7-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 104 (CH: 105), the 14-day notification rate is 202 (CH: 222). In total 29,848 vaccinations have so far been administered in Basel-Stadt. 12,429 people have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination. As of 11.45 on Friday, 26 March 2021, 45,995 people have pre-registered for vaccination. In addition, a further 1,378 people have a pre-arranged vaccination appointment at the vaccination centre.

Of the 281 active cases, 23 residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. In addition, seven people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 30 people in hospital, three require intensive care.

The total of 10,467 cases of infection in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 9,992 recoveries, 194 deaths and 281 active cases. There have been 120 new cases of infection since the last bulletin on Tuesday, 23 March 2021. A further death has been reported, that of a 64-year-old woman with pre-existing conditions. She died in hospital.

Information about sources of infection

The current sources of infection have been recorded as follows: 262 new infections were recorded in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 26 February to 25 March 2021). 42 per cent (or 111 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (56 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (5 per cent) or at work (12 per cent). 14 per cent said that they had several possible sources of infection.

The current situation in Basel schools

Primary schools and nurseries (total 12,814 pupils and 1,906 staff)

  • 397 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 3.1 percent.
  • 34 teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 1.8 percent.

Secondary schools (total of 4,343 pupils and 650 teachers)

  • 24 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.6 percent.
  • 2 teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.3 percent.

Higher secondary schools and vocational colleges (total of 7,400 pupils and 1,170 teachers)

  • 83 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 1.12 percent.
  • 10 teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.85 percent.

Please note: No figures will be collected for the next two weeks because of the Easter holidays.

Status of vaccinations

As of yesterday, Thursday 25 March 2021, 29,848 vaccinations had been given in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. A total of 12‘429 people in the Canton of Basel-Stadt have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination. As of 11.45 on Friday, 26 March 2021, 45,995 people have pre-registered for vaccination. In addition, a further 1,378 people have a pre-arranged vaccination appointment at the vaccination centre.
