Coronavirus: Tuesday bulletin on the case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Tuesday, 23 February 2021, 10:20, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 9751 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 116 active cases in isolation and 276 people in quarantine. The 7-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 46 (CH: 64), the 14-day notification rate is 97 (CH: 150). In total 20221 vaccination doses have so far been administered in Basel-Stadt. 8592 people have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination.

Of the 116 active cases, twelve residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. In addition, ten people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 22 people in hospital, six require intensive care.

The total of 9,751 cases of infection in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 9,444 recoveries, 191 deaths and 116 active cases. There have been 48 new cases of infection and one man aged 87 has died in hospital as a result of Covid-19 since the last bulletin on Friday, 19 February 2021.

Information about sources of infection

The current sources of infection have been recorded as follows: 539 new infections were recorded in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 26 January to 22 February 2021). 52 per cent (or 281 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (42 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (4 per cent), at work (9 per cent) or at schools providing compulsory education (6 per cent). 26 per cent said that they had several possible sources of infection. None of the residents in Basel-Stadt nursing homes have tested positive at the moment. This is very promising. It is all the more important to keep adhering to the safety polices.

The status of vaccinations

As of yesterday, Monday 22 February 2021, 20,221 vaccinations had been given in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Yesterday, Monday and today, Tuesday, the vaccination centre’s mobile teams are administering second vaccinations in a total of five nursing homes. A total of 8,592 people in the Canton of Basel-Stadt have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination. Just under 4,000 people have so far joined the waiting list set up last Friday.
