Coronavirus: Friday bulletin on case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Friday, 16 April 2021, 10.40, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 11,262 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 364 active cases in isolation and 788 people in quarantine. The 7-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 140 (CH: 138), the 14-day notification rate is 260 (CH: 283). In total 38,952 vaccination doses have so far been administered in Basel-Stadt. 15,990 people have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination. In future, Basel-Stadt will also be carrying out regular systematic mass testing in schools.
Occurrence of infection in the Canton of Basel-Stadt: Of the 364 active cases, 29 residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. In addition, 15 people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 44 people in hospital, eight require intensive care.
The total of 11,262 cases of infection in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 10,701 recoveries, 197 deaths and 364 active cases. There have been 161 new cases of infection since the last bulletin on Tuesday, 13 April 2021. No further people have died of the consequences of Covid-19.
Information about sources of infection
The current sources of infection have been recorded as follows: 1069 new infections were recorded in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 19 March to 15 April 2021). 41 per cent (or 442 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (60 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (9 per cent) or at work (10 per cent). Eight percent said that they had several possible sources of infection.
Status of vaccinations
As of yesterday, Thursday 15 April 2021, a total of 38,952 vaccinations have so far been given in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. 15,990 people have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination. 55,402 people have pre-registered for vaccination. In addition, a further 4,253 people have a pre-arranged vaccination appointment at the vaccination centre.
The current situation in Basel schools
Primary schools and nurseries (total 12,814 pupils and 1,906 staff)
- 67 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.6 percent.
- 11 teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.6 percent.
Secondary schools (total of 4,343 pupils and 650 teachers)
- 40 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.9 percent.
- No teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0 percent.
Higher secondary schools and vocational colleges (total of 7,400 pupils and 1,170 teachers)
- 36 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.49 percent.
- 7 teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.6 percent.
These figures show that the situation in schools in Basel-Stadt is currently settled.
Mass testing in schools
Testing in schools in the Canton of Basel-Stadt has so far been isolated, in response to outbreaks. This is now being extended with regular systematic mass testing. It will be possible to gradually begin voluntary, systematic mass testing at the end of April/beginning of May. The Department of Health and the Department of Education will give details about this in advance.
