Coronavirus: Friday bulletin on case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Friday, 12 March 2021, 10.30, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 10,078 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 197 active cases in isolation and 659 people in quarantine. The 7-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 75 (CH: 78), the 14-day notification rate is 143 (CH: 163). In total 26,980 vaccinations have so far been administered in Basel-Stadt. 11,274 people have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination. As of 13.30 on Friday, 12 March 2021, 36,140 people have pre-registered for vaccination.

Of the 197 active cases, 20 residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. In addition, six people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 26 people in hospital, four require intensive care.

The total of 10,078 cases of infection in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 9,688 recoveries, 193 deaths and 197 active cases. There have been 88 new cases of infection since the last bulletin on Tuesday, 09 March 2021. No further people have died of the consequences of Covid-19.

Information about sources of infection

The current sources of infection have been recorded as follows: 439 new infections were recorded in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 12 February to 11 March 2021). 46 per cent (or 201 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (50 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (6 per cent) or at work (10 per cent). 22 per cent said that they had several possible sources of infection.

The current situation in Basel schools

Primary schools and nurseries (total 12,814 pupils and 1,906 staff)

  • 168 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 1.3 percent
  • 16 teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.8 percent

Secondary schools (total of 4,343 pupils and 650 teachers)

  • 30 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.7 percent
  • No teachers in quarantine or self-isolation

Higher secondary schools and vocational colleges (total of 7,400 pupils and 1,170 teachers)

  • 30 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.4 percent
  • 3 teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.3 percent

The status of vaccinations

As of yesterday, Thursday 11 March 2021, 26,980 vaccinations had been given in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. First vaccinations in all 42 Basel-Stadt nursing homes as per the official list of nursing homes were completed on Wednesday. Second vaccinations have also already been administered in 31 of the 42 nursing homes. Second vaccinations in the remaining eleven nursing homes will be administered by the middle of April at the latest. A total of 11‘274 people in the Canton of Basel-Stadt have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination. As of 13.00 on Friday, 12 March 2021, 36,140 people have pre-registered for vaccination.
