Coronavirus: Tuesday bulletin on the case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Tuesday, 12 January 2021, 11:00, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 8785 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 475 active cases in isolation and 708 people in quarantine. The 7-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 202 (CH: 188), the 14-day notification rate is 339 (CH: 465).

Of the 475 active cases, 60 residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. In addition, 29 people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 89 people in hospital, 15 require intensive care. The level of tension in the cantonal hospitals is medium-high.

The total of 8785 cases of infection in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 8143 recoveries, 167 deaths and 475 active cases. There have been 177 new cases of infection, and four men and women aged between 80 and 94 have died as a result of Covid-19 since the last bulletin on Friday, 08 January 2021. All four people died in hospital.

Information about sources of infection

The current sources of infection have been recorded as follows: 1856 new infections were registered in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 15 December 2020 until 11 January 2021). 53 percent (or 977 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (46 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (9 per cent), at work (13 per cent) or in a nursing home (12 per cent). Eight percent said that they had several possible sources of infection. 36 residents from ten different nursing homes have currently tested positive. A certain easing of tension can currently be observed in the Basel-Stadt nursing homes.
