Over 10900 people in Basel-Stadt have so far received the first dose of the vaccine against coronavirus and over 3700 further individuals have already received two doses of the vaccine. In total almost 14700 vaccination doses have so far been administered in Basel-Stadt.
Of the 222 active cases, 27 residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. In addition, 17 people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 44 people in hospital, 10 require intensive care.
The total of 9553 cases of infection in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 9143 recoveries, 188 deaths and 222 active cases. There have been 97 new cases of infection since the last bulletin on Friday, 05 February 2021. Of the seven deaths reported since last Friday, six are subsequent reports of deaths that have occurred since the middle of January. The large number of deaths reported last Saturday therefore did not occur all at once. The seven deaths consisted of four women and three men aged between 75 and 96 years. They all died in hospital.
Information about sources of infection
The current sources of infection have been recorded as follows: 761 new infections were recorded in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 12 January to 08 February 2021). 57 percent (or 431 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (46 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (4 per cent), at work (11 per cent) or in a nursing home (6 per cent). 20 percent said that they had several possible sources of infection. Twelve residents from three different nursing homes have currently tested positive.
The current situation in Basel schools
The new, more infectious variants of coronavirus (“variants of concern” or “VOC”) require a stricter quarantine procedure. Basel-Stadt is following the quarantine regulations of the FOPH. There has been a clear increase in the number of people in quarantine as a consequence of the updated procedure. Under the stricter quarantine measures, whole classes are quarantined more quickly than before, and more contact persons are sent into quarantine because of enhanced contact tracing.
There are currently no seats of infection in any of the schools in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. However, some classes where there is a case of the mutated virus are currently affected by extended quarantine. Classes in the schools St. Johann, Gellert, Hirzbrunnen, Rittergasse, De Wette and Vogesen are some of those affected. The Department of Health is carefully monitoring the situation and is in close contact with the Department of Education.
Bajour granted exemption for Schnitzelbank recording
Online medium Bajour is also being granted an exemption for the live broadcast of Schnitzelbank recordings during the 2021 Fasnacht Carnival. The Department of Health Basel-Stadt examined a corresponding application from Bajour and found it to be compliant with the guidelines of the Covid-19-Ordinance Special Situation. The Schnitzelbank performances will be broadcast live on YouTube and Facebook on the evening of the Monday of Fasnacht, 22 February 2021.
