Coronavirus: Recommendations for nursing homes, hospitals and clinics on how to deal with visitors

The Department of Health Basel-Stadt has issued recommendations for nursing homes, hospitals and clinics on how to deal with visitors.

The latest prognoses assume that the coronavirus will spread in the region for several weeks and months. The Department of Health Basel-Stadt has therefore developed recommendations for dealing with visitors in nursing homes, hospitals and clinics.

Recommendations for nursing homes

Nursing home residents cannot be expected not to receive visits from friends and relatives throughout the expected duration of the spread of the coronavirus. The Department of Health therefore recommends that nursing homes in the Canton of Basel-Stadt restrict visiting hours and go through the prepared health checklist with every visitor. If the visitor answers “yes” to at least one question, the visitor should be advised to postpone their visit.

The health check using the questionnaire should be conducted on all external persons who enter or work within the nursing home. This applies to all events and entertainment programmes for the nursing home residents, concerts, religious services, and to service providers in nursing homes such as delivery drivers, hairdressers or chiropodists.

Recommendations for hospitals and clinics

Receiving visits from their relatives is important for patients. However, hospital stays are often for a limited duration. The Department of Health therefore recommends that hospitals and clinics in the Canton of Basel-Stadt restrict visiting hours and access to a minimum. Where possible, social contact should be by telephone instead of by visits in person.

These are recommendations for hospitals and clinics. They can also introduce their own rules or stricter rules.

Visitors must be reminded of the importance of adhering to the Department of Health rules of conduct and their adherence to these rules checked where possible:

  • Ensure that visitors disinfect their hands;
  • Give instructions on the use of face masks;
  • Information regarding not kissing during greetings, hugs or handshakes;
  • Recommend generally keeping the necessary distance from patients.

Please note:

This questionnaire can / should also be used for visits to elderly relatives who are not nursing home residents.
