Coronavirus: Friday bulletin on case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Friday, 5 March 2021, 10:50, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 9932 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 162 active cases in isolation and 550 people in quarantine. The 7-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 69 (CH: 67), the 14-day notification rate is 128 (CH: 151). In total 24,908 vaccinations have so far been administered in Basel-Stadt. 10,300 people have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination. As of 13.30 on Friday, 5 March 2021, 26,473 people have pre-registered for vaccination.

Of the 162 active cases, twelve residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. In addition, eight people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 20 people in hospital, six require intensive care.

The total of 9,932 cases of infection in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 9,578 recoveries, 192 deaths and 162 active cases. There have been 65 new cases of infection since the last bulletin on Tuesday, 2 March 2021. No further people have died of the consequences of Covid-19.

Information about sources of infection

The current sources of infection have been recorded as follows: 521 new infections were recorded in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 5 February to 4 March 2021). 44 per cent (or 229 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (46 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (5 per cent), at work (11 per cent) or at schools providing compulsory education (6 per cent). 23 per cent said that they had several possible sources of infection.

The current situation in Basel schools

Primary schools and nurseries (total of 12,814 pupils and 1,906 teachers)

  • 30 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.2 percent
  • 11 teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.6 percent

Secondary schools (total of 4,343 pupils and 650 teachers)

  • 11 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.3 percent
  • No teachers in quarantine or self-isolation

Higher secondary schools and vocational colleges (total of 7,400 pupils and 1,170 teachers)

  • 31 pupils in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.4 percent
  • 5 teachers in quarantine or self-isolation, corresponding to 0.4 percent

The status of vaccinations

As of yesterday, Thursday 4 March 2021, 24,908 vaccinations had been given in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. On Wednesday and Thursday (3 and 4 March 2021) first vaccinations were administered in five of the nine Basel-Stadt nursing homes that have not yet been vaccinated. A total of 10‘300 people in the Canton of Basel-Stadt have been fully vaccinated with the first and second vaccination. As of 13.30 on Friday, 5 March 2021, 26,473 people have pre-registered for vaccination (as of Monday, 1 March: 8,800, Tuesday, 2 March: 14,600, Wednesday, 3 March: 20,000, Thursday, 4 March: 25,200).

New voice messages and posters

The Division of Prevention of the Department of Health Basel-Stadt has been keeping foreign-language speakers informed with voice messages since November 2020 and has updated these messages with the regulations that have been in force since 1 March 2021. This is in cooperation with the Canton of Basel-Landschaft, HEKS/EPER Regional Office Basel (both sides) and FemmesTISCHE Basel. The new messages are so far available in over ten languages and community representatives are spreading them in their networks via Whatsapp. There are also posters and flyers with QR codes that lead directly to the voice messages.
