Coronavirus: Tuesday bulletin on the case numbers in the Canton of Basel-Stadt

As of Tuesday, 05 January 2021, 12:00, the Department of Health Basel-Stadt had recorded a total of 8382 positive cases among people living in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic, 531 active cases in isolation and 639 people in quarantine. The 7-day notification rate per 100,000 residents is 195 (CH: 204), the 14-day notification rate is 440 (CH: 478). Over 2,000 people in Basel-Stadt have so far received the first dose of the vaccination against coronavirus.

Of the 531 active cases, 64 residents of the Canton of Basel-Stadt are in hospital. In addition, 44 people from outside the canton or abroad are being treated in hospital in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Of the total of 108 people in hospital, 19 require intensive care. The level of tension in the cantonal hospitals is medium-high.

The total of 8382 cases of infection in the Canton of Basel-Stadt since the start of the pandemic consists of 7688 recoveries, 163 deaths and 531 active cases. There have been 392 new cases of infection, and 19 men and women aged between 44 and 97 have died as a result of Covid-19 since the last bulletin on Tuesday, 29 December 2020. Twelve people died in hospital and seven in a nursing home.

Information about sources of infection

The current sources of infection have been recorded as follows: 2140 new infections were registered in the Canton of Basel-Stadt during the past four weeks (period from 08 December 2020 until 04 January 2021). 51 percent (or 1084 cases) of the new infections could be attributed to known or suspected sources of infection. Most of them caught the infection from their own family (43 per cent) or when meeting with family or friends (6 per cent), at work (16 per cent) or in a nursing home (10 per cent). Nine percent said that they had several possible sources of infection. 52 residents from ten different nursing homes have currently tested positive. A certain easing of tension can currently be observed in the Basel-Stadt nursing homes.
