The Canton of Basel-Stadt allows restaurants to open as staff canteens
Department of Health
From today, 3 March 2021, staff primarily from trade businesses may be served food between 11.00 and 14.00, subject to conditions, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Restaurants are being allowed to open in accordance with a derogation passed by the Federal Office of Public Health that permits them to function as staff canteens over lunchtime for people working outside of business premises.
Restaurateurs can open their restaurant as a staff canteen for trade and agricultural businesses from Wednesday, 3 March 2021. Between 11.00 and 14.00, restaurateurs are allowed to serve staff from businesses from the following industries: trade, construction, road maintenance (main construction and finishing trades), installation services and agriculture (horticulture, farming and forestry).
The process is very straightforward: In order to open as a staff canteen over lunchtime, all restaurants need to do is register in advance with the medical services of the Department of Health Basel-Stadt by email (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Staff who will be visiting the restaurants must be registered there in advance by their employer. Restaurateurs record patrons’ data and keep it for 14 days for the canton’s contact tracing. Finally, restaurants must adhere to a strict safety policy. This aims to prevent any infections and to allow the situation to be quickly contained in the event of an outbreak.
The Canton of Basel-Stadt has discussed implementation with the landlords’ association of the Cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft (Wirteverband beider Basel). A list of participating restaurants will shortly be published on the website www.coronavirus.bs.ch. The cantonal authorities responsible for Covid-19 inspections (Department of Health, Office of Economy and Labour (AWA), Cantonal Police) will be checking implementation on site. A corresponding general decision was issued today by the Department of Health Basel-Stadt.
